No client, no signed lease. De Steeg is a self-initiated brand and concept strategy for a small West Frisian neighbourhood venue at Nieuwsteeg 14, Hoorn, built as a case study in disciplined small-format design: one room that carries breakfast, coffee, lunch and borrel without turning into a generic all-day cafe.

The regional grounding is specific, not decorative. Hoornsche broeder and West Frisian krentenmik are real local specialties, still eaten today with butter and syrup: the tradition lives at the table, not in museums. For drinks, a Bonte Koeffie fits the idea: coffee, with a schippersbitter and sweet whipped cream.

The work covers positioning, brand identity, a four-daypart menu logic built on one shared pantry, and a space plan for a compact 20-seat layout. The storefront, interior and food imagery are AI-generated concept visualizations developed for this study, not photography of a built or leased address.

This is a concept study, not an operational venue. Research, validation and execution are not yet complete.

Challenge

Small West Frisian addresses often default to either a themed heritage concept or a generic all-day cafe. The question: can one small room carry four dayparts and a specific regional identity without turning into either.

Outcome

A complete concept study: positioning, brand identity, a four-daypart menu structure, a space plan for 20 seats, and a local-sourcing framework, proposed as a direction for the address, not yet a committed lease, menu or build.

Transferable insight

Regional identity works as a design constraint, not a theme. Naming the boundary between what is provably local and what is broader Dutch tradition keeps a small concept precise instead of nostalgic.
